And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. It is produced basically now because I was the first coach that took the United States from nowhere to the top of the world. Anson: The irony is I speak in moral leadership conferences, and any soccer coach alive, and I always warn them if one of them raises their hand and asks me do you think you can develop leaders Im going to say no. But talent is just so overwhelmingly tempting. Yep, I dont work very hard. And so what all of us do is the vice president thats the least highest paid in any company is the HR person because theyre basically dealing with whiners and, you know, litigants and everything else. And I called her up to sort of vet him. Their own narrative that is not interested in exploring their potential but is crafted to keep them comfortable while recruiting every possible excuse along the way. So how do we want to live? Now will this help them change their opinion of you? So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. And all of a sudden in this New York Times magazine article shes talking about the extraordinary transformation that took place in her life when she was asked to memorize all of this literature and poetry. And hes won more than 800. They guide the players from season to season, practice to practice, minute to minute. Anson: And this will crack you up. Their parents love them out of this diluted feeling that, Im going to build my kids self-esteem by telling them how wonderful they are when theyre not. And now all of a sudden, I have to deal with these kids. Is that true? Think about that for a second. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. Anson: Well, they are good. So who am I in this player conference? Anson: And I said you know what, I agree with you. And then she said, and this is a wonderful backhand compliment, she said, you know, after I played for you, I felt like a play for anyone. And Ive learned that youre not going to change everyone. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. And how do you know they dont want to work for you? So are the four V four and five V five, everything is recorded in this practice and I am just stunned watching this. Like this interview. But the amount of energy it required was overwhelming. And so I learned a lot from Jack. So I really, really appreciate it. Everyone is motivated differently and youve got to get to the core of who they are. And so I had all these things, fundamental statements like, we work hard or, we dont whine, basically all the principles to try to create this great culture.
