Turn right and, just before the bridge, follow the path to the right through the woodland to join the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail. Go over Canal Bridge 50, cross the road and walk along the canal towpath of the Trent & Mersey Canal. Turn right and head towards the railings, then turn left and follow the railings until you reach the cricket club and car park. After walking for a short period you will see ahead and to your right a very tall elegant looking spire, the spire of the village church. Cross the field diagonally towards the top left-hand corner where you will find another stile (marked with a public footpath sign). Follow the path to climb up through the wood, descend by a flight of timber steps, through a timber gate and follow the surfaced path to reach Outwoods Park, (with Percys Grove on the left). Shortly after passing under a concrete road bridge turn right over Canal Bridge 49 immediately after Bagnall Lock and continue ahead past some garages on the left (ignoring the public footpath sign on your right). This Trail is suitable for all ages from 6 - 106 (no children necessary!) Walk along the end of a second car park and pick up the footpath to cross the bridge ahead of you. Keep going down this lane. Park on route for the kids by the cricket club. This is a fairly narrow path taking you cross country, past ponds, fields and woods. There is a canal visitor centre that is worth exploring, however it is run by volunteers and times of opening vary. Cross over the bridge and continue along the towpath on the other side, passing under two roads, until you reach the next canal Bridge 38 at Barton Turn. Turn right out of the Canal & River Trust car park. NOTE: If you want to stop for refreshments turn right to The Horseshoe Inn in Tatenhill, about 150m along Main Street. In the wood, bear right climbing gently. The surrounding parkland is well worth exploring too with woodland trails, meadows, ponds, lots of butterfliesand some interesting sculptures to see. As you exit into open fields, try to continue to follow the National Forest Way signs but youll see the village of Alrewas in the distance. Go into the next field and follow the worn footpath diagonally across this field to reach a concrete bridge over a stream and pass through a small five-barred gate into the next field. As you approach the end of this section you will see ahead of you Keepers Lock and Bridge 50. You can pick up the canal towpath on the western side of the village and follow it west to Fradley Reservoir and Fradley Junction. Youll need to carefully cross over this the cars do go quite fast. At the Co-op, turn right along Crowberry Lane. Follow the canal towpath to Fradley Junction. 9. Entering the village we cross over the River Swarbourn to see little more than a stream. From the entrance to the main building, turn right along the edge of the car park to take the path running through the railway tunnel to Conkers Waterside. Starting from the arboretum car park in Alrewas, you eventually join the Alrewas Lock before walking to the Wychnor Lock. Cross this road (be mindful of the fast traffic), go over the stile ahead (marked with a public footpath sign) and enter the field. We tend to head for the George and Dragon Pub (DE13 7AE). 10. Cross the stile, over a footbridge and double stile, then turn left. 10. Youll easily find parking on the main road or one of the side streets. At the end turn right on to a gravel track that follows the river bank around the edge of the Arboretum, past plantings and memorials. Follow Marina Walk between the canal basin and the pub, keeping the shops and cafes on your right. Once youve parked up walk back up Main Street towards the canal bridge. Further along the towpath you will come across Sluice Gate number 15. We then retraced our steps to the A513 to find the footpath.
